SOLAR THERMAL POWER CONVERSION
Solar thermal power plants use the sun’s rays to heat a fluid, from which
heat transfer systems may be used to produce steam. The steam, in turn, is
converted into mechanical energy in a turbine and into electricity from a
conventional generator coupled to the turbine. Solar thermal power
generation is essentially the same as conventional technologies except
that in conventional technologies the energy source is from the stored
energy in fossil fuels released by combustion. Solar – thermal
technologies use concentrator systems due to the high temperatures needed
for the working fluid. The three types of solar-thermal power systems in
use or under development are: parabolic trough, solar dish, and solar
power tower. Presently, only hydro and wind power plant at good sites can
generate electricity in an acceptable cost range .The potentials of hydro
and wind power on the other hand are limited. However solar electricity
generation is a nearly unlimited source. Photovoltaic is one promising
technology .The sun has produced energy for billions of years. Solar
energy is the solar radiation that reaches the earth. Solar energy can be
converted directly or indirectly into other forms of energy such as heat
and electricity. Electricity can be produce directly from solar energy
using photovoltaic devices or indirectly from steam generators using solar
thermal collectors to heat a working fluid. Photo voltaic energy is the
conversion of sunlight into electricity through a photovoltaic cell
commonly called a solar cell. A photovoltaic cell is non mechanical device
usually made from silicon alloys. Renewable power plants are needed if a
high amount of hydrogen shall be produce for the use in climate-compatible
energy market. This solar electricity generation will take over an
important part in the near future solar powered desalination offers now
opportunities for hydrogen production. Hydrogen produced with electricity
from solar thermal plants will be one major option for clean fuel
alternatives and electricity supply when storage possibilities are needed.
solar thermal power generation technology consists of three types thermal
power system. The three systems are parabolic through system power tower
system and dish engine system. Together they are key technologies for a
sustainable energy industry with a main focus on climate protection. |
